The Five Classic Typefaces

Century vs Garamond
My favorite typeface out of the five classic typefaces is Century. One of the first qualities that popped out the most is that Century is very easy to read. In fact, it is a very popular typeface because of its legibility. I picked Garamond as my second choice because the comparison between the two fonts is interesting. An obvious difference that the two typefaces have is their boldness. Like Garamond, Century pays attention to thick and thin strokes within the letters, but it is not as dramatic as Garamond’s style. These less exaggerated features makes Century’s typeface bolder than Garamond’s. The boldness of this font helps create great legibility for reading purposes. Garamond’s attention to think and thin features make the font harder to read because the letters are not as bold. The spacing between letters is different between the two fonts. The letters are evenly spaced out in the Century typeface, which is another characteristic that helps its legibility. The letters in Garamond are pushed close together, obviously making it harder to read. Another reason why Century is more legible than Garamond is because the letters are sized evenly. For example, with Garamond’s features, compared to the other letters, the lower case “a” has a small bowl. By changing the size of features in the letters within the font, it decorates the font style to appear hand written.

Design Comparison

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec VS Paula Scher

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French artist, born in 1864. La Goulue, made in 1891, came from the inspiration of Japanese woodcuts. This influence helped Lautrec create a visually impacting poster with the use of flat color and line. The repeating “Moulin Rouge” stood out to me the most in La Goulue. After reading more about it, I learned that the reason why the words are tripled is to create a bouncing effect, to mimic the rhythm of the dancing hall being portrayed. The letters throughout the entire poster are capitalized, but the rounded edges of the font create an inviting look to the poster. The joyous setting being shown through the dancing people is used to spark the audience interest into attending.

Paula Scher’s, born in 1948, uses New York City as an influence to create energetic and bold designs. The pentagram shown below is a seasonal campaign poster made for The Public Theater. She uses typography to her advantage to emphasize entertainment and excitement. Much like Lautrec, she uses flat color and lines to create a visually impacting poster. Scher placed words in a funky way by angling their baselines to express more emotion. We see the same qualities in La Goulue with the use of repetition in words. Ironically enough, both posters use the same four colors: red, yellow, black, and white. All of these aspects create a very inviting look for the two posters, which was the goal for both artists.

Graphic Design Is…

My Perspective Of Graphic Design
Graphic design is very important because it is used everywhere. It creates an eye-catching style to communicate information and advertise objects.  Publications, posters, billboards, websites, and street signs are a few examples of everyday objects that would be lost without design.  Aside from the importance, imagination and creativity brings entertainment to life with the use of design. Designers have the ability to create books, movies, CD covers, and games. Graphic design will enhance simple objects into exciting, interesting illusions. It is present everywhere people look which makes graphic design visually important.

What is Graphic Design?

Corporate Design
In high school I was an intern at Spire Corporation with the graphic design and marketing department. I attended many trade shows and would also help with the preparation of the corporation’s trade show booths. This required a lot of printing of documents retaining equipment information. Experiences enabled me to learn printing skills and really turned my interest to corporate design. I enjoy designs that are clean and to the point; and that is the style in the business world. This is why I think that corporate design would be the perfect fit for me.

Interaction Design
Interaction design is a computer-based skill that helps create user experience through the Internet. For any corporation, the Internet takes up a large percentage of their audience. Because of this, it helps to know interaction design very well. I think I would be a good fit for interaction design because I really enjoy using computers and I enjoyed the programming classes I have taken in the past.

Advertising Design
In order to have really great marketing designs, designers have to understand advertising. This type of design uses images and type creations to visually appeal to an audience of traditional campaigns. I think I would be a good fit for advertising design because I really enjoy working with typefaces, and one of my favorite hobbies is photography. These three aspects of graphic design will put me in the best path to getting into a great corporation.
