Design and Play

In the article by Paul Rand, he discusses how artist’s cannot just rely on their natural talent and instead he believes there needs to be rules and guidelines in order for the artist to reach there full potential. ” Without the basic rules or disciplines, however, there is no motivation, test of skill, or ultimate reward- in short, no game” (156). I agree with Rand’s thoughts because its true, if your gifted with an artistic talent and never improve your skills, how can you become a better artist? This article connects to me because as an artist with not that much skill, I enjoy getting assignments that have rules to them because it makes me really have to work to figure out what my final piece will look like. I do enjoy branching out and thinking outside the box, but as Rand said before how you cannot reach your goals without knowing the basic rules, its basically like cheating the system and as an artist I am dedicated to learn from the beginning.

The Five Classic Typefaces

When viewing all five typefaces, Garamond is the eye catcher for me. Its rounded edges give it this simple and elegant look. It’s considered to be the most legible and readable serif. Garamond was created in 1615 and because of its history and how long it has been around, that is a reason why I think the font is so unique. Bodoni was my least favorite font, I say this because I am not a fan of the sharp edges that Bodoni’s font has on the bottom of the letters. It is more of a vertical font and seems strict with its lines. Bodoni was considered a modern type face. Considering that Bodoni was created 157 years after Garamond, the possibility of these straighter edges could have been becoming more popular and Garamond just seemed to be this old regular font that everyone was so use to. Personally I disagree and I say this because Garamond has this classy look to it and Bodoni is kind of more straight forward. Overall, the typeface of Garamond is natural and attractive which gives it that simple look to it.

Design Comparison

Wes Wilson vs. Milton Glaser

After reading chapter two in the book, Wes Wilson and Milton Glaser were two artist whose work connected with me the most. Wes Wilson was the very first artist to create a psychedelic poster which was fascinating to the art world because it was something new and creative. Milton Glaser was a graphic design artist who was best known for creating the Bob Dylan Poster and other logos that are seen daily by everyone. What I really enjoy about both these artist is how they use vibrant colors in their work and its not just plain, its rather more abstract than anything.

Wes Wilson’s style of art was very unique and different because it seemed like he wanted to confuse everyone who was viewing his work. Even though he was the first to create this psychedelic style of art, others soon caught on and his career was basically over. I really enjoy this style of art because when viewing it, you have to find the message behind it yourself rather than it being told to you directly.

Milton Glaser also really captured this abstract style of art in some of his work but not all of it. He was responsible for creating the I <3 New York Logo and especially the Bob Dylan Poster. These two examples both show how he was talented in both sides of the spectrum, ranging from being really abstract to being really simple art designs. “Glaser’s poster of Bob Dylan, which became an icon for the 1960’s experience brought psychedelic language to mainstream America” p 64 Guide To Graphic Design. This quote just shows how his use of unusually depiction’s of what something looks like is appealing to the human eye and is appreciated.

Both Wes Wilson and Milton Glaser have a shared interest in the psychedelic style of art and so do I because it more than just art, its creativity. Their use of vibrant colors and strange fonts brings out the real artist inside of them and artist like me who are more abstract can connect well to these artist.

Graphic Design Is…

My Perspective Of Graphic Design
Graphic design is a way to express your ideas and thoughts into a piece of art that can have more than one meaning behind it. What graphic design does for an artist is to be able to grab anyone’s attention with your piece of artwork and for them to look at with an open mind and hopefully the message that is trying to be shown is visible to the viewer. Graphic design is how you communicate ideas, messages using just images, or just type or both. Its the creative process you use to make a statement, sell something, try and persuade some to buy your product, or just to get their attention (like a billboard with a picture of a beautiful woman sipping a glass of wine) what makes you STOP and look at something longer than a second. Graphic design helps connect people to things…like creating a logo…it is a bridge between the company and the person they want to sell to. When you see the golden arches that are the shape of an M you know it McDonalds because a designer created the icon.

What is graphic design?

Creative.graphic-design

After carefully reading chapter one in the book, Guide To Graphic Design by Scott W. Santoro, I truly feel that I have a better understanding of what graphic design is. Throughout the chapter there were multiple graphic design categories that I can see myself pursuing as a career for the future. These categories were Brand and Identity Design, Book Design, and Advertising Design. What interest me about Brand and Identity Design is being able to create something that can be very simple and be so eye-catching to the viewer that can possibly change the way they look at things. I believe that I would work well in this field of Graphic Design because of my creative thinking which gives me the capability to express my thoughts and create logos and websites that people will see and ask themselves, “Wow, thats actually interesting”, rather than all the pointless ads we see that really have no meaning to them. Book Design is another field in graphic design that is interesting to me because if the cover or back of the book is not appealing to the eye, most likely that person may not purchase the book even if the story inside is an award winning novel. The outside of the book has to stand out and pop to the consumers eye’s in order for them to give it a chance. I can see myself in this field because I understand what can or cannot work to make a book cover all around look great and be able to be as good as the writing inside. Lastly, Advertising Design is the field where I can see myself in the future doing as my career. What interest me about this field in graphic design is how someone can create an advertisement that has such an amazing meaning to it and all it can be is a simple slogan, picture, or logo that impacts its viewers. I believe that I would work well in this field because of my love and compassion for design and my talent to be able to create something that will sell and be looked at rather than it just be ignored.

There are two books that I have found that connect to what I am interested in. One of the books is called, “100 Best in Design 2012” and “Graphic Design: Inspirations and Innovations”.  From the first book here are some images that capture what I’m interested in:
