The Design and the Play

In the beginning of this essay by Paul Rand, he talks about the difficulties in teaching and how a students success is going to rely on their natural talent. In schools there is barely any attempt of progression from basic design to applied design. One of the biggest design problems is teaching the possibility of relationships. Teaching should have a split of learning theoretical problems and practical problems. As Rand goes on he gives different problem possibilities by showing and explaining a few games like crossword puzzles and Tangrams. I really enjoyed when he talked about creating work with simple means but being very satisfied with it. For example when he was describing the Cubist collage he says ” The playfulness and humor in the production of some of these compositions in no way detracts from the end result- a serious work of art” (Rand 169). That statement struck out at me the most while reading this and it connects back to the title of the entire essay.

5 Classic Typefaces

Out of all five classic type faces the two I chose were Helvetica Neue and Garamond. Helvetica Neue was the typeface I mostly liked. This typeface is everywhere. On the gravitate online website I read that it used by Apple for there iOS mobile devices which I found very cool. We all have Apple products and text all day every day so Helvetica Neue is part of our every day life. Even in class when we watched that video about it, I think its awesome that we go around reading all these signs that are part of our everyday life and most of them are in the typeface Helvetica Neue. Garamond is a very different typeface compared to Helvetica Neue and I chose these two because of how much time is between the creation of these. Garamond was created in the 1600’s while Helvetica Neue was created in the 1900’s. I like that Garamond has the difference in thickness within the strokes. Reading Steve Bowden’s page I found it very interesting that Claude Garamond had created typefaces that were used for royally ordered book series. Also that almost 100 years after Garamond’s death the typeface became a popular one.

Design Comparison

Victor Horta (1861-1947) was a Belgian architect. Victor began studying architecture at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He went to Paris from 1887 to 1880 and worked in the studio of the interior decorator Jules Debuyson.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was a French artist. He is heard along with artist such as Van Gogh as one of the most famous artists during the Post-Impressionism period.

Victor used the Art Nouveau  which was a style developed in Europe and North America at the end of the 19th century it was a style of natural forms that were translated into high contrast shapes and patterns. They were very appealing and reflected traditions on history and the classics. In his architectural work he had the stairway in the Tassel House as his main focus. The spacial movement created an organic flow to both the exterior and interior.

Henri also used the Art Nouveau and his became the most expression pieces. Commercial printing was when graphics and color could be combined and reproduced with losing its quality. In his piece called La Goulue he uses flat color and line but the way he works it, it creates a strong visual impact by having the solid black crowd and the dancer against each other. By doing what he did with the simple colors and line he causes the paper to become a part of the drawing. Here you also see typography and it flows nicely with the images like the way he put moulin rouge, rather than just being put on the page.

These two images struck out to me the most while reading through the chapter. Both are from the time period of the Art Nouveau. Also both have sort of like a hidden blend of images in them that make them  very famous. The stairway has the natural organic vine like that flows all around, which I find absolutely gorgeous. In the print the use of the solid black crowd creates a spacial distance and makes the dancer stand out showing that she is the importance in the print. With these similar comparisons i found it interesting because just looking at them you would never think that these works would be similar.

Graphic Design is…

Graphic Design is…

Graphic Design I’m sure has many meanings but for a short way of putting it, I think it is art that can be through technology. Being able to use your imagination to create a design using type and illustration.

What is graphic design?

In high school I took Illustrator and loved it, it was something I definitely wanted to continue in the future. The library had many options of books with Illustrations. I took out ‘Handbook of Illustration’. In class Randall said it was okay if you are not a good drawer, So I think this book good be good for someone if they want help with that part of art. Also in my class I did ads, logos, posters, and magazine covers. This helped to think about what category of design I could possibly be interested in. ‘Letterhead Logo Design’ was a book I found that gave plenty of examples of logos on business cards and envelopes, which is something I made in high school. Reading through chapter 1 Advertising Design is something I’m interested in because it deals with working in the media and marketing. When I was thinking about doing this major I really wanted the business aspect with it. I found a book called ‘The Art of Creative Advertising’ that had plenty of examples that interested me.

Environmental Design
Environmental Design is seems very cool. I have thought about this also. Being able to design in buildings and working closely with architects. Lastly I thought Publication Design would fit for me. Magazines are seen every where even around the world. Reading in the chapter under this it said Publication included travel, business, entertainment, and fashion which are all things I really would like to do.

This website is for erik kowalski. He is an artist and a professor. He teaches classes such as graphic design and web sign and on his page he has incredible work. There is so much going on in them and are very abstract some even have phrases that are interesting.

Graphis
This is a website where published and talented designs, advertisements and photography are posted to inspire and aspire young artist. I enjoyed it a lot it has beautiful magazine covers and book covers that some of you are interested in.

This is a very cool website, its intriguing as soon as you pull it up. LUST is a graphic design establishment that started in 1996 in the Netherlands. They have a very broad spectrum of media. They are very interested in exploring new pathways of design.
