What is Graphic Design?

Areas of Interest:

Motion Design:

I am currently a Film and Graphic Design major so therefore it is easy for me to say that my interest lies within the topics of art in motion. My main focus for the future is to become an animator or get a job along those lines. It goes without saying that as a Film major I love film and many forms of art that comes with it, but with the combination of design and film and some, motion design seems to be the area of design I am most interested in.

Interaction Design:

Using visual art to develop a program that can be used and explored through by its users just sounds cool to me. It has become clear that I like to create certain pieces or projects that include my viewer, user or audience and calls for their reactions or emotions towards what I create for them. Just like making a film for an audience to watch; creating a software for a user to use and interact with satisfies me equally.

Brand and Identity Design:

I intern at a local labeling company where I work with the marketing team contributing various ideas and illustrations for the company to use to promote their products. I see many logos, spec sheets, and general company strategies and designs used to capture the eye of the average curious customer. Having experience through the label company gives me more knowledge on what to expect from the area of brand and identity design.

Research:

The book I chose to research is called “Coast to Coast: Contemporary American Graphic Design”.

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is art that is both aesthetically pleasing and has a practical purpose.

Areas of interests:

I am currently interested in package design, logo/Brand design, and web design. I want work in those lines of work because you have the opportunity to be creative and innovative but still making a decent amount of money.

Package design is something that has staying power we are always going to need to pack and hold products and designing a new and interesting design will help to sell your product. Also I like the idea of creating designs for items that will make people choose that product, I know for myself at least how the package looks plays a big part in whether I choose one product of another, better looking designs tend to mean the company put more work into the product so it’s going to be of better quality.

I like logo/Brand designing because the brand design is the very identity of the business or product. I particularity like logo designing because logos are very iconic, quite literally they are icons, even if someone doesn’t quite remember what the name of an organization is they will remember the logo.

Web design is of course a field of work that is very upcoming and popular, I Have taken a web design and construction class and I liked having the ability to design something that I can change on a moment’s notice and not really have to go through the whole process of reprinting something. As many of the modern world uses computers and internet there is a need for websites and having a professional looking site is a big advantage to those that don’t

What is Graphic Design?

UnknownGraphic Design is a visual expression of ideas placed on just about anything: shirts, business cards, envelopes, stationary etc. It also gets other people to see the same vision in different ways.

Career Interests

• Corporate Design – I believe that corporate design would be a good fit for me because you need to stay consistent with the company’s visual identity and it would also allow for the work done to be completely pressed upon the public’s minds. I have always thought that sometimes simplicity is nice and it gets the message across quickly, and that is what I’ve seen a lot in some of corporate designs.

• Book Design – Designing for books would also work for me not only because of my love for books, but also knowing that you helped make that book happen, even though they are more and more electronic readers.

• Book Jacket Design – This would also work for me because of my love for books and reading and I always thought that looking at the cover of a book really can give you insight as to what’s inside the book.

• Signage Design – I know that I always get lost or don’t always know where I’m going while driving and I’m not alone. Making signs to tell people where to go would not only help myself but it would be help to all the other people that need to know where to go. Sometimes going into small towns you see those “Welcome to…” signs and they’re elaborate and fun looking and to me that just seems like a great way to do some work.

• Brand and Identity Design – Making logos has always been something that’s been fun and interesting for me through high school. Using Illustrator to create something that you will see on everything that company has to produce is a good feeling. Looking at it and saying “I did that” has always been something that will put a smile on my face and make everything worth while.
