The Design and the Play
The design and the play article by Paul Rand discusses many different ways to teach, practice, and learn the fundamental principals of design. It mentions that it’s not always a good idea to have total freedom and no rules. For example: how students should be taught rules and given guidelines for how to design, rather than allowing them to rely on their natural talent and imagination. In contrast to this he also states that no matter how hard a student studies, “a students unltimate success will depend largely on his natural talents.” This was confusing to because because in a way he is contradicting himself, but it also makes you think that guidelines set a criteria of what is expected and then the designing aspect of the task is left up to the natural talent you have inside you to come up with your own ideas. This just demonstrates how guidelines provide direction, but still have grey areas that allow students to fill in with their own talents. The play-principle serves as a base for serious problem-solving. For example in Josef Albers paintings he uses the same strict geometric pattern to challenge himself with the use of colors. It is used to trick your eye because without color the painting is ment to give a three-dimensional image with depth, but with using a variation of colors it displays a two-dimensional image to the eye. Overall, the article discusses the power of restrictions in design, while testing an artists natural talent and ability to challenge themselves.
5 Classic Typefaces
After studying the five typefaces (Garamond, Baskerville, Bodoni, Century, Helvetica Neue), I began to understand the differences between them all. My two favorites are Baskerville and Helvetica Neue. Baskerville is crisp and elegent the way that the thicks and thins add character to each letter. The letters all flow well with each other especially with the lower case letters having cury serifs. Helvetica Neue is also nice because I see it as the most “universal” font of the five. It can be used universally for just about any occation and the sharpness of the lines are visually strong and make the type very legible.
If I had to choose a font that I liked the least it would most likely be Bodoni because the blocky and cut off serifs to me are kind of awkward when reading. Yes serifs are supposed to make a text easier to read and flow from letter to letter, but I find the flat serifs distracting and unappealing. It honestly just looks unfinished compared to a typeface like Baskerville.

Graphic Design is…
My Perspective
Graphic Design is a way to express your inner thoughts. All the doodling in grade school finally pays off when you learn that there is such thing as a sketch book. Graphic design is the art of being able to combine two or more things together to make something new and beautiful. It’s about expressing those weird and obscene thoughts that come into your mind because you never know, they might be the next big thing to someone else. It’s an art field that is inviting to artists and allows them to create their own designs while staying with in a certain template.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“I strive for two things in design: simplicity and clarity. Great design is born of those two things.” – Lindon Leader
“Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, it’s decoration.” – Jeffrey Zeldman
“The life of a designer is a life of fight. Fight against the ugliness. Just like a doctor fights against disease. For us, the visual disease is what we have around, and what we try to do is cure it somehow with design.” – Massimo Vignelli

T-Shirt Design Process
For our class project we were asked to design t-shirts based off of what we think graphic design is. This was not a simple make a single design and iron it on but we took many steps to create our final t-shirt design. We started with making a list of what we personally thought graphic design is and narrowing it down to one. My final thought was that graphic design is “eye catching.”
Next, we were asked to make 24 individual thumbnails of some rough t-shirt designs.
We then began to critique and choose what designs worked and why and what designs didn’t work and why. After this we were assigned to make 36 more t-shirt designs with one single phrase trying to communicate what our thoughts on graphic design is.
After this we narrowed it down to our best design mine was the last design on the first page which is graphic design is eye catching and the design is based off of the design of an eye test chart that can found in the doctor’s office. Below are just a few of many designs created on Adobe Illustrator/ Photoshop. The last one is the design that I used for my final t-shirt. I think the design was simple compared to some of my original thumbnails but was the best as far as the composition.
Design and the Play Instinct- Response
In the article Design and the Play Instinct by Paul Rand, he describes how ultimately a students natural talent is what will ultimately make them successful. Two problems exist with this according to Rand, the first is if you give students too much freedom with there work there final work will be meaningless without any structure whereas if the student is instructed with to much direction they’re creativity is restricted and thus the end result is a meaningless solution. Rand explains that teaching should be mutual between the student and the instructor. Alfred North Whitehead explains, “The pupils, have got to be made to feel they are are studying something, and are not merely executing intellectual minutes.”
