What Interests Me About Graphic Design

Why Am I Interested?

I am interested in graphic design because to me it is really interesting. Graphic design goes into almost everything we do every day and learning the motivation behind certain things is something that I want to pursue educationally. Personally, I do not want to be a graphic designer, rather I want to use these skills just to further my personal interests that I have! During the reading, I came across two types of graphic design that really jumped out to me. I feel that both fit my personality well and are something I would love to learn more about.

Environmental Design

The first area in the reading that really interested me was the section on environmental design. I have always loved going to museums and art galleries and I love how much work goes into the presentation. Personally, building more of a “set” for displaying art or designs is much more of my style. I find it very interesting that these designers work closely with architects and the lights and sound. Instead of designing one part or one thing, they design a total experience for the viewer. It makes for a more organic experience with the art that you are viewing. SEGD has a great image collection of 40 great moments of environmental design and Gresham Smith is a design team that strives to design environmentally.

Packaging Design

The second area of graphic design that interested me would be packaging design. The idea that the way a package looks could influence who and how many people buy something is very interesting to me. The subliminal messages that we don’t realize in everyday packaging and how to make a package more cost-effective but also appealing to consumers is very interesting to me. I feel as though I am a more colorful person than many and the motivation behind certain coloring in packaging is really neat. The Dieline is a packaging design blog and I have also included a link to a video below that shows two designers competing to make a package prototype.
