Intro: Summarizing Chapter 1

The thing that draws me into graphic designing is my passion for arts and for story telling. Reading Chapter 1 gave me a deeper insight on what graphic designing is. After reading the chapter, I found myself more interested in Graphic Designing. In the chapter, graphic design is described as a field of study that incorporates aesthetics, structure, emotion and utility. It is thus not a lie to say that it is a multidimensional subject. Since I love learning new skills and using them, graphic designing is interesting to me. The history of graphic designing dates back to cave painting, mosaics and woodcuts. This shows how communicating in an aesthetically appealing way is the foundation of human civilization. Graphic designing is an important part of the society.

Career in graphic designing sounds appealing to me since the field is always changing and advancing and I want a career that is dynamic. Graphic designers get paid to be creative and expressive and I cannot think of a better job than that.

Two graphic design categories that appealed to me the most are:

Publication design

Since I work for the student newspaper, publication design has a special place in my heart. The publication design combines photography and typography, two skills that are interesting to me. Publication design even though is a category itself, has wide categories within itself. This design enables you to communicate important news information in a way that grabs the attention of the readers.

Being able to use both your right side (logic) of the brain and the left side (creativity) of the brain is what draws my attention towards it the most. This link has a number of ideas for newspaper design. This is the site that we use for ideas at the student newspaper as well. While I was doing more research, I found a tutorial on publication design as well.

Advertising design

 The fact that your design can influence people’s purchase decision is powerful. As a management major with minor in arts, advertising design speaks to me. With few words, you need to be able to market your product and create a brand image. I think this work requires a lot of creativity and organizing. Advertising design has become an inseparable part of our lives in today’s world. Our decisions are heavily influenced by it.
