Why Graphic Design?
I have always been interested in graphic design but never had the opportunity to try it. I love to be creative and express myself. However, I am terrible at painting, drawing, and pretty much anything that has to with art. With graphic design it is different, it is created with technology. I have been passionate about photography for a few years now. I edit all my photographs in Adobe Lightroom, so I am excited to start using Adobe’s other programs. My experience with graphic design is very minimal but I have always been fascinated by it. I am a public health major, so I am not taking this class because I want to do this for a career. I am taking it to see what else is out there and experience something other than science. I am very interested in packaging design and advertising design. I believe these two types of design are probably the ones we see most often in everyday life.
Packaging Design
When it comes to buying a product it is all about the look of the item. When I am shopping for anything, I tend to buy whatever catches my eye. This is where packaging design plays a huge role. When walking down the isles of a grocery store looking for a bag of chips, I am going to choose the one that looks most appealing to me. If I am looking for a spicy flavor, I am going to pick up the bag with flames on it over the plain boring looking bag any day. Packaging design is crucial for any type of product.
One industry that is all about packaging design is makeup. Every makeup brand designs there packages uniquely. It is almost a competition on who can come up with a better packaging design for their product. Some of my favorite packaging design for makeup comes from a company named Beauty Bakery. They design their products to look liked baked goods. For example, their foundation is packaged in a box of cake mix and their setting powder is packaged in a bag of flour. I think this is an excellent package design because it is so unique and will catch any consumer’s eye when looking for makeup.
Advertising Design
Advertising design is another crucial way to sell a product. If a company has a great advertising design it is going to make a consumer go out and buy their product. The internet is flooded with advertisements nowadays, you can not even go on Facebook or Instagram without seeing an advertisement. The key to a good advertisement is to catch the consumer’s eye. The way to do that is with a very unique advertisement design. The company’s advertising design has to be bold and it has to stand out if they want their products to sell. That can be done with bright colors, unique fonts, aesthetically pleasing, or just something out of the box.
