After reading chapter 1 in Elements of Graphic Design, it gave me a much better understanding of how important the use of spaces are in design. Spaces that are empty and filled should be balanced so that the design is easy for the reader to follow and so that the work looks neat. When making a design, we want to get a reaction out of the reader and get them engaged in the work. If the design is a mess and pieces are crowded then it may be harder for the reader to understand it. In advertising, you rarely wont ever see a confusing message because the company doing the advertisement wants to get the clearest and most efficient way possible to get their product across to you. Empty and active spaces make up the piece of art that is being created. Empty space is pretty much the piece that is not intended to be the main focus. Empty space is usually used as a background and is meant to keep us more attracted to the active space. The active space is where the main focus of the design is and should catch the reader’s attention first. This space should pop out and catch the reader’s eye when looking at it.
