Gestalt Theory
Gestalt means pattern, figure and structure is unified. The gestalt theory is that we perceive things in whole rather than in individual elements. This is understood by exploring and unpacking how your mind automatically visualizes the face of someone rather than feature by feature. We are always observing our surroundings as a group to create what goes together. Having these principles of design in place creates set of ideas for any artist to explore and learn.
Six principles found around me:
White Space

This is a picture of my fridge. The magnets are sporadic across the fridge and are different shapes and sizes. The white space or negative space around the magnets lets your eyes become more focused on the magnets themselves. The actual white background gives them a pop and looks seamless against it. I chose this principle honestly because it was the first thing I looked at while doing this assignment. However, I also feel like we find white space more in real life as it is something that does stick out to our eyes so much.
Emphasis

This is a picture of my drink. This is showing emphasis because the squares and yellow circle are all pointing in to draw your eyes to the two bulls. Emphasis is shown in a lot of branding for advertising a product. Emphasis allows the individual to have a clear visual oath and know exactly where to look and focus.
Contrast

This is a picture of my couch. The shape and color of the pillows are different but your eye gravitates to the white first as white has a larger contrast to green and blue. This principle is one that I felt like you must actually look for or place to be aware of. Many things have contrast but may be more difficult for an average person on the day to day life to point out. I chose to do contrast for that reason. Contrast is all around us but we must look for it to depict the concept.
Variety

This is a picture of some spices. At first it was hard for me to find something around me that provoked variety. Then it dawned on me that we have these spices. Some are the same yes, but most are different colors, brands, sizes, and shape. Variety is all around us and can be found almost anywhere. With this example I also got the idea of grocery stores and how each product on a shelf has some sort of variety to it. Certain pops of color or changes in font size or container shape can help a product stand out.
Repetition

This is a picture of the floor tile. Tile uses is repeated same with wallpaper. This title is a bunch of squares at different sizes and angles that fall into the next creating a pattern. I think repetition is hard to find in daily life unless it is something like this. I do not really like repetition and find it almost boring to the eye.
Balance

This is a picture of my sink. I thought this would be a great representation of balance. In my apartment there are jack and jill sinks in the bathroom and our products are laid out in an equal and balanced way. I enjoy balance in my life and seeing things that are balanced like this makes the area feel calmer and clean.
