Design and Play Paul Rand

My Response

After reading Paul Rand’s informative article about The Design and Play Instinct I have learned that it is ideal for a student to have a mix of both theoretical and logical practice and a basic understanding of all of the principles. With my perspective as a student I happen to agree with the authors perspective on teaching because I am naturally drawn to having self expression and playing around while doing assignments. Teachers struggle with their perspective of a student as once in that teacher role they often forget how it felt when they were students themselves. Teachers can use this information to develop new processes to engage the students. The more fun an assignment is the better engaged I am, while also allowing my creativity to flourish; playing is a natural part of learning. However, there is a need for rules. Without explicit rules an individual falls sort of having the motivation and direction to proceed. Providing the discipline it takes in the industry. It allows me to have an expanded view of ideas of graphic design and how to apply these instincts to careers in the future. Limitations are used everywhere and focused in the classroom. Our class has many for assignments. Including only using certain shapes, the number of them, and how they can be distorted. This posed a challenge where in turn allowed me to think outside of the box and really test the skills  I have learned.
