Grids & Frames in Graphic Design

The concept of the “frame” is much more then simply putting a border around an image or placing a photograph in a decorative case. Framing something can have many different uses and influences that serve both designer and onlooker. Personally I have never given this idea much thought, however after reading the text, I feel as if I have a better understanding of how to effectively “frame” something. “Framing” metaphorically shapes the way we understand something and creates the conditions in which we think about it, or it can literally dictate the way our eye travels throughout a composition. For example, I would not fully understand the pictures and images within the reading without the corresponding captions and sub titles that frame my interpretation of their meaning. Windows shape the way we take in the environment seen through them, similarly to the way a photograph is “framed” by its lenses. Doors can be frames as well, a door decorated with Christmas decorations will influence a different understanding of its interior then a door with several locks and chains. Overall, the idea of “framing” plays a much bigger role in both graphic design and our daily lives then I ever realized.
