Elements of Graphic Design – Matthew White

Space in Graphic Design

I find an interest when talking about the design element space. Space attracts readers by making the page look easier to handle, rather than looking at a crowded page. If a page is readable, people have a much easier time getting the point across than if someone were to look at a much crowded, unreadable page. Space is found in many different types of design pieces.  Some different types of space used in design are empty space, and active space. Empty space is the space of a design that is not being used, or blank. Empty space mostly consists of a color or background. Empty space creates a comfortable pattern for the eye and can surround the active space. Active space is the space of a design that is being used, or the focus. Active space consists of shapes, text, or anything that takes up space. When Active space is combined together with empty space, it draws peoples attention from the empty space to the active space, giving the allusion that the design is easier for the viewer to read.

Here is an example of a design that uses active and empty space. When looking at this iPod ad you can see the empty space which would be the colors surrounding the silhouettes. You can also see the active space in this design which would be the silhouettes. The empty space surrounds the active space in this design, just like many others found in the world of design.
