The Design and The Play
After Reading the page The Design and The Play Instinct by Paul Rand, I now realize that a specific amount of geometry is involved in design. Many geometry functions are used in graphic design to act as a guide. The page is set up as a grid in order to fill the space correctly. I found that the spaces are not set up as a geometric pattern but as an easy guide to make the perfect design. This method is used for the Chinese character “tan” (meaning sunrise). A geometric grid is shown to easily fill the spaces correctly.

I agree with Rand’s statement how teaching from a student’s perspective can be more beneficial. One of the main factors that Rand suggests that creates a problem for the student is the way it is being taught. Rand writes, “The absence in art of a well-formulated and systematized body of literature makes the problem of teaching a perplexing one.” Rand suggests that the solution to this problem is found by giving the students freedom and self-expression. This causes the students to become more interested in the problem creating a meaningful solution. When I personally think of the times I have been given a problem and found interest in finding its solution is during art class. I was given a task which created the problem of completing the task. When it came to art I could freely complete the task in any way I pleased. Given the freedom and self-expression of creating my own art piece by solving a problem, tested my abilities to complete the task.
