The Design and The Play Response
Throughout the reading, Rand brought up many great points that I believe all of us forget the importance of sometimes. Personally, when it comes to school, I am not a fan of assignments that don’t have a lot of guidelines. Some people love having that space to let their creativity flow but, me not being a very artistically inclined person, I get stressed out when I have that much freedom. One thing I have noticed in my time at college is that a lot of professors favor giving loose guidelines so, I have had to learn to overcome that. I am always so afraid to go beyond my comfort zone, which is something that you have to break out of when it comes to design. Art is a form of communication. Artists express themselves through their pieces in a way they cannot with words. When you put up boundaries and restrictions, it stops the artists from creating to the best of their ability in the way they wish. At the same time, rules encourage taking a different approach to things that they might not have thought of if they weren’t forced. This not only applies to graphic design, but to life in general. With the pandemic going on around the world right now, everyone is forced to adapt to the new rules in order to keep everyone safe. This has made people search for other ways to go on and live their life while still following within those restrictions. Rules allow for more critical thinking to find what is pushing the boundaries while still staying within them. It encourages educational and personal growth within students and I completely agree with Rand’s perspective.
