What is Graphic Design?

For this post, I’m going to be discussing Advertising Design and Motion Design. I decided to use these two because I believe we come into contact with these forms of design the most, or at least hold the most impact on our lives.

Advertising Design:

We have all seen advertisements. From cars to clothes to cutting edge technology, companies are always trying to sell us, the consumers, as much as they can. In a similar field to marketing, advertising design requires the designer to incorporate what the client wants, the message behind the advertisement, and what the audience should see and why it would appeal to them. Ads can include a range of different elements to get the message across, such as sound, video, color, text, images, etc. Additionally, there are different types of graphic design. These include, videos/commercials, displays, social media, mail or email, event ads, and newspaper/magazine ads. This allows for designers who want to go into this line of work to explore their interests and focus on what they like the most.

Advertising design is a really important field, as ads are ubiquitous. I am more interested in motion design, but I think the wide range of specified fields would allow for us designers to find our niche. There are tons of examples of advertising design, some of which can be found in the article 17 Advertisement Design Examples and Why They Work. I found this article to be really helpful because it allows us to obtain a better understanding of what makes an ad successful.

Motion Design

Even though we may not realize it, we see examples of motion design in our everyday lives. You can find some of the best examples in this article, 7 Cutting-Edge Examples of Motion Design. It tends to involve graphics, figures, pictures, words, and sound compiled together to make what’s almost a short film. However, unlike regular commercials with various videos comprised to feature a product, motion design is usually animated graphics that promote a message or can be used as a logo. Some of these are used as commercials or to give details about a company, while other times it can be used as a transition between scenes like the Saturday Night Live example below.

I found motion design to be so intriguing because I love how it combines all different elements of graphic design. It’s not just one type, its a little bit of everything! I think this could present a challenge because it would require the designer to be somewhat skilled in various programs, not just Photoshop or Illustrator but both, as well as others. You need to be able to make a video without using camera footage, but that delivers the message just as clearly. I also believe this would make working in this field more fun because you can experiment with tons of various techniques and programs, allowing you to develop your knowledge all around. I think I’d do well in this field because my interests change often, and I find myself becoming incredibly passionate with new things frequently. I’m also fairly adaptive, so having to use various skills would be doable.
