Why Does Graphic Design Interest Me?
Art and design, of all types, has always interested me since I was really young. Graphic design specifically was something I loved to play around with when I was young, though I hadn’t realized it was graphic design. I would make 10 slide powerpoints about random things like cats or my favorite desserts/candies and I would spend hours and hours working on all the slides to make sure each one looked aesthetically pleasing; not too busy, but not too plain and empty. I’ve only taken one graphic design class before, but it was more of a digital painting class, so I don’t have a lot of experience. This isn’t something I’m planning to pursue as a career, but I would love to learn more about graphic design and what goes into the larger projects we see all around us every day, as well as different aspects put into the different categories.
Package Design
One of the categories in the reading that interests me is package design. I love when I buy a product and the packaging of the product is unique, fun, and overall pleasing. It just brings that extra bit of excitement to the product, and makes me want to buy more. Whether it’s an intricate, complicated, yet fun design, or a simple but pleasing design, like the pasta packaging below. It’s also interesting to me that often times, people will choose to spend more money on a product with a pleasing package design, rather than that same product with a bland design. There is a lot of thought put into package design, more than most people realize. I found an article explaining what exactly goes into package design, the thought process of it all, and it gives helpful tips to any readers planning to create a product with a pleasing package design.
Environmental Design
Another category that interests me from the reading is environmental design. The process, just from the reading, seems so complex and the designers have to work with so many aspects of design, like lighting, audio/visual media, and sound techniques. Many viewers don’t realize or think about that when viewing and appreciating these. I know I had never actually considered everything the designers have to work with to create these pieces. I actually found an article written by an environmental graphic design artist explaining what he does and specifically what he deals with when creating environmental graphic design. I thought this article was very insightful and fascinating. I have always loved going to museums or art galleries or even just in big cities, and looking at large pieces and taking in all the details and designs of them. Specifically, there’s a piece that I’m pretty sure is in Boston, Mass on the outside wall of a large building. The piece has small pieces of material sticking out of the side and as you drive by, it turns into an image or based on the angle you’re seeing it from. I have always loved it, but I can’t remember exactly what it looks like or where in Boston it is.
