Create powerful reductive graphic form.<\/strong><\/h1>\n
The objective of this assignment is to translate a photograph of an animal into a series of graphic images. This could be an insect, a bird, a fish, a mammal, etc, (not a person).\u00a0Creating reductive graphic form from continuous tone images is an important skill for designers. Rather than simply using a software filter to mechanically change the texture of an image, graphic designers must use visual intelligence to accentuate some details of an image and push others into the background. Being able to translate a photograph or drawing into a variety of visual styles is essential.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

1<\/h1>\n

Search the web for 8-10 images of a living creature from the natural world whose body is completely within the frame of the photograph. This includes non-human creatures such as mammals, fish, birds, plants, anything…perhaps with the exception of bacteria which are a bit small.<\/p>\n

2<\/h1>\n

The images must be at least 1000 pixels in height, width or both.<\/p>\n

3<\/h1>\n

This image must be completely discernible from the background\u00a0(or have a white background). Do not choose celebrities or other syndicated consumer imagery. The image should be raw.<\/p>\n

4<\/h1>\n

Open the image in Photoshop and adjust the contrast of the image until you have a strong mix of lights, darks and mid-tones. Don’t blast out the detail. Preserve as much detail as possible. Save the image as “[animal name]_original” \u00a0in your project folder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5<\/h1>\n

Open illustrator and place the image in the middle of a 6\u00a0x\u00a06\u2033 square in illustrator. The image must fit within the square and be enlarged within 1\/2″ of the frame. Do not get too close to the edge. Outline the artboard with a thin (.5 pt) black line.<\/p>\n

Digital Translations of a Single Image<\/strong><\/h1>\n
1. Original edited photograph<\/strong><\/div>\n
2. Silhouette:<\/strong> Entire image outlined and filled with black.<\/div>\n
3. Curved Shapes Vector:\u00a0<\/strong>Create a tightly translated image of the creature using all curved vector shapes (no angles) filled in with black.<\/span><\/div>\n
4. Geometric Shapes vector:<\/strong>\u00a0Use the pen tool with only corner points (just sharp angles, straight lines, no curves) to create form filled in with black.<\/span><\/div>\n
5. Triangles:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Use only\u00a0triangle to\u00a0create all forms and values using that shape. Do not let\u00a0the shapes touch each other. All triangles filled in with black.<\/span><\/div>\n
6. Abstraction: <\/strong>Strongly amplify and simplify the creature\u2019s features. This must express the idea and spirit of the creature using stylistic form.<\/span><\/div>\n
7. Your Choice:<\/strong> Create a new digital translation that expresses the shapes, volume, and spirit of the original image.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
