Chapter 1 of Elements of design helped me to understand what space does for design, how to make the design more visually pleasing, and how it helps the viewer understand what they’re reading. The concept of space in design is very important because when the active and empty spaces are balanced, the design is clear and much easier to follow and read. There’s a lot of thought that goes into this design process, thought that you don’t see from the image. It seems somewhat simple when looking at it, but for the designer, it’s a lot of work and thought and creativity as well. The whole design and that pleasing factor depends on the layout and how things are set up, as well as how readable it is. It can’t be too busy or too crowded, or the design may become more like a distraction to viewers from what the design is trying to portray. Similar to real life, people tend to avoid crowded or busy places because they may feel unhappy or uncomfortable in these environments. It can become stressful and overwhelming. Instead, people oftentimes choose to be around calm, peaceful, stress-free environments.<\/p>\n
I am currently in my dorm room writing this, and it took me quite a bit to really decipher what parts of my room are empty. It all seems to be very active; I have posters on 3 of the four walls, and bunk beds against the fourth wall. Even the beds are active, my roommate’s bed has blankets and pillows everywhere, where mine is made nicely with about 7 decorative pillows and string lights and polaroids on the wall. The floor is a bit messy and so are our desks and dressers. Our window has a BLM poster I painted hanging in it, so there’s not much here I can find that’s empty. Everything is very active. I guess the doorway might be empty, we have no posters or anything hanging there yet. The ceiling might be considered empty as well, although it is a textured ceiling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
