These type faces include Helvetica, Garamond, Didot, Century, and Baskerville. Each providing a different style and unique make up. Many things make up a font from their anatomy like the use of baselines (where the letters sit), ascenders (upward stroke) and descenders (downward stroke), and the hairlines (thin stroke) and links (stroke that connects the top and bottom bowls) to name a few. Besides anatomy fonts are categorized by type, old style, modern, traditional and san serif. Types line spacing and I will be focusing on my two favorite fonts, Century and Baskerville.

Century

Created by Linn Boyd-Benton in 1894 Century is labeled as an Egyptian type face. With an Egyptian font the serifs and strokes have little to no contrast. Which allows this font to be very great at reading. I like Century for their “r”s and “t”s, they have a lot of expression. The “r”s tail is very care free and brings a sense of child esque mannerisms to the font. The capital “t” has very sharp and thick arms.

Baskerville

Created by John Baskerville in 1757 Baskerville is considered a traditional type face. Being a transitional type face it allows contrast to the thick and thin serifs with less heavy brackets and the letters are over all wider creating the best proportions. I like Baskerville for the descenders on the “y”s and how the bowl is almost like an ink pool. I would also like to point of how the “g” looks very nice with a disconnected loop. I believe that the font can be used in a formal setting while still giving a sense of character to the writing.

Type Faces & Anatomy There are five classic type faces that make up all other fonts.
