These are known as the guidelines on how to use visual elements to create and exposition.

1. Repetition

This principle of design is when a component is repeated when other components with similar features and characteristics are arranged in a composition. In repetition, only one feature needs to be shared among the different components. The other features the components contain doesn’t matter, as long as one characteristic is the same. The characteristic that can share similar features is form or size. In design, repetition unifies, makes the design consistent, and shows the relationship between the components of the design.

This Apple ad represents the principle of repetition because the phones are repeatedly in line and are the same type of phone. The only thing different is their color.

2. Rhythm

When it comes to rhythm, there are different frequencies involved. There are two types of frequencies; even and uneven. When a frequency is even, the components of the design have equal distance between them. And vice versa for an uneven frequency. For a design to have rhythm, the component needs to have varying distances between several frequencies.

There are five types of rhythm;

Random- No specific distance between frequencies.

Regular- Some distance between frequencies.

Alternating- A ‘1-2-1-2-1-2’ pattern.

Flowing- A rhythm that follows bends and curves.

Progressive- A rhythm that changes as they go along with each change building upon the previous.

In design, rhythm influences emotion, creates excitement that builds over time, and it also creates reassurance.

This milk ad follows the flowing rhythm. The viewer can follow the flowing milk and there is an eye pleasing wave of ‘milk’.

3. Balance

There are two properties of balance in design; symmetrical and asymmetrical.

If a design is symmetrical, then if an imaginary line was drawn vertically, both sides would be the exact same. If the sides are different, then your design is asymmetrical. A design is considered balanced when all objects in the design, have visual equilibrium.

This advertisement for headphones represents balance because of it’s symmetrical design. If you were to draw an imaginary vertical line down the middle of this design, each side would be perfectly symmetrical.

4. Proportion/Scale

In design, proportion refers to the relationship between objects, referencing their size and visual weight. When it comes to size, the larger the size of an object, the more importance it has. With visual weight, boldness of letters, emphasizes importance.

This ad uses proportion/scale to promote mini pepsi cans. As a viewer can see, the thumb and index finger are pinching a tiny glass of pepsi. It enforces the message of promoting mini cans of pepsi.

5. Contrast

Contrast in design creates a focal point. This occurs when elements in the design have vastly different properties such as size, color, or shape. Contrast is used specifically to create focus, emphasize the most important element, and creating interesting visuals with differences between elements.

Color contrast

Shape contrast

Scale contrast

Type contrast

This coca cola ad represents contrast because the fork and knife create an image within them. The viewer can make out the very recognizable shape of a coca cola bottle.

6. White Space

White space is simply empty space within a design. It can also be referred to as negative space. White space emphasizes an object in composition, or in other words, creates focus.

This is a great example of white space. Almost like contrast, the white space is used to create the shape of the panda.

Gestalt Theory

The word Gestalt is German and stands for a pattern, figure, form or structure that is unified. This psychology movement took off in Berlin in the 1920s. It was kicked off so that we could have a better understanding of how our minds perceive things in whole forms. Basically Gestalt explains when and how our minds perceive different visual components as being apart of the same group. Like said earlier, Gestalt theory is based on the idea that the human brain will will try to simplify and organize things by subconsciously arranging the parts into a system as a whole, rather than just a bunch of different elements. According to Cameron Chappman, our brains are built to see in structure and patterns to better understand things we see and the environment we are in. These were originally created by Max Wertheimer, Stephen Palmer, and other theorists. There are ten principles within the Gestalt Theory; simplicity, figure-ground, proximity, similarity, common fate, symmetry/parallelism, continuity, closure, common region, and element connectedness. Gestalt is everywhere we look and it shifts the way that we think. I believe that we recognize Gestalt in society every day, but it’s just so common that nobody understands the science and meticulous placing of it.

The Principles of Design The following principles are only six of the eleven principles of design.
