The following design is an ad for Target! In the ad, you can see the dots from the background overlap onto the woman that is also in the picture. It almost makes her blend right into the background. I think the pop of color within the white in the ad draws your attention in, and the repetition of the dots is super interesting to look at – very eye-catching. It would make sense that this photo would be used to capture the attention of the consumer and get them to read what the ad is associated with!

Movement

Movement is when a design guides your eye through a predetermined path. This design shows the growth of a tree! The design moves from left to right with arrows that guide your eye as you read. It leads you on a specific path that allows you to understand the design. If you were to read it out of order the design would not make as much sense. This design also allows you to easily understand what information you are being taught. I like the simplicity and the color choice of the images in this infographic. I also really like the small text blurbs underneath the different parts of the image that describe to you what is happening. You can look through the graphic as you read about the path that the designer has taken you on.

Balance

Balance is when all pieces of a design are visually equal. In the logo to the left (Airbnb) everything is very balanced. Both sides of the design feel as though they are very equal. Even though the letters at the bottom of the logo are different on the left and the right, they are all the same size with a very simple typeface that makes them feel weighted the same. It is super satisfying to look at a balanced design, and it pleases the eye. I also enjoy how the design itself is one fluent line that closes on itself when finished. It is very simplistic and elegant!

Contrast

Contrast is when the elements in the design have very different colors, sizes, shapes, etc. The Spotify logo (shown to the right) is a perfect example of contrast in design. The brightness and vibrancy of the green against the black background make the logo pop. Your eye, when you first look at the logo, goes directly towards the design and the wording. You almost don’t recognize the background at all because it is just blank, black space. I use this app every day and have never thought more critically about the design until now when I noticed how contrasting the image is!

Emphasis

Emphasis is when focus is created on a particular element of the design to show its importance. The first thing I thought about when I read this definition of design is newspaper titles. Often the articles place a huge emphasis on the most important key points of what they are writing about. This article (shown to the left) is from the sinking of the Titanic. You can see in giant letters across the top “TITANIC SINKS, 1500 DIE”. Without even looking more into what the article is about you can understand the key points of what you are about to read. The design emphasizes this quote to capture the attention of readers so that they can make more sales of their paper.

Hierarchy

Hierarchy is the process of arranging pieces of a design to convey information simply. An example of this would be a packaging website called Packlane (shown to the right). Packlane allows you to design your shipping supplies or order ones that already have designs on them. The website is very simple and step-by-step which makes all the information easy to understand. I love the simplicity and how almost basic everything looks. There is no overcrowding and it is not overwhelming to browse through and see what catches your eye!

Gestalt Theory

I learned that the Gestalt Theory is used to help understand how we see things as a whole. When we are looking at something our brain tries to simplify what we are looking at into one thing that is easy to understand. We want to see structure and patterns in things. There are about 11 different categories of the Gestalt Theory, but some of these can be grouped into the same category depending on how they are used. These categories are simplicity, figure-ground, proximity, similarity, common fate, symmetry, parallelism, continuity, closure, common region, and element connectedness. All categories of this theory showcase a different way that we understand and simplify things. It is often used to make designs that have more flow when you look at them. In everyday life, we take part in the Gestalt Theory, even if you realize it or not. In all of the designs above we are constantly trying to find the bigger, simpler picture to look at. It is hard to realize when you may be doing it because you have probably been doing it your whole life, but looking at designs and trying not to simplify can make you see things you never have before. One that surprised me was the arrow between the last e and x in the FedEx logo. This was something I have never noticed before until it was mentioned because my brain was always just looking for the bigger picture.

6 Principles of Design Repetition Repetition is when a piece of the design is repeated among other pieces of the design.
