Last semester I was in a video production class, and each of our assignments came with a limitation. For instance, we could only use still images, or we could only use close up shots. These limitations, rather than inhibit my creativity, actually facilitated it. They allowed me to create films I would not have made otherwise. If a student has access to an entire palette, there is no inspiration, no sense of play. There are no guidelines to make a sort of game out of the assignment. In this class so far we’ve had assignments that limit out palette, which makes a lot of sense. We would be lost on what to create if we were simply given access to everything. The typeface project and the black square project got us to think of graphic design on a very basic, bare-bones level. At the same time though, we are being challenged to stick to these parameters, and are learning the principles of graphic design in the process. All in all, I completely agree with the author’s stance. I would be totally lost in this class had it not been for the style of assignments we’re doing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
I think that the author’s take on teaching an art applies to a lot more than just graphic design.
