Throughout centuries we have evolved the craft and form opinions and illustrate time periods with materials, prints, and font. The style changes along with the message. The world of graphic design today is influence by viewing the art and messages along the way from history. We take their inventions and adapt to improve. We understand their messages which helps learn about why the art was the way it was. We restructured art to make it less of a luxury and more of a hobby and passion. We still today use art and graphic design as a voice and to share opinions and feelings with others to relate. We now how technology to experiment we even more mediums and varieties of art. Whether a three dimensional structure, a poster, or photo graphic design is great and share beauty with everyone. I chose to focus on the industrialization period as the world as we know started from here in the building and structural aspect. Next I chose designing utopia and focused on constructivism as political and cultural was displayed through a variety of messages. Then I chose modernism in America as I felt like I strongly related to the passion and understanding of creativity and uniqueness of being able to do more with how much the art world was growing. Last I chose psychedelic language this one was the easiest to chose as I always love the 60s and 70s for the music , color, and art.

Response to Industrialization

This era of graphic design took place during the industrial revolution from 1760 to 1840. This time was responsible for the Golden Bridge by John Ruskin, introduction to typography and product placement. Brandy Willets wrote a nice article that explains How the Industrial Revolution Impacted Graphic Design. Inventions during this time allowed artists to experiment more with color, text and photos. Many artists of this time were painting god like art and even capturing legal bounding moments. From this the industrialization era brought on the movement of Arts & Craft in 1880. Design History has a page on their website that showcases the timeline on How the Industrial Revolution Spawned the Arts & Craft Movement. Starting from paper makers making paper out of wood pulp that stop the yellowing of paper. John Ruskin was a critic and aligned with a secret society to “frivolous art” and bring back truth t nature. These brotherhoods influenced artists like William Morris who starting incorporating art into future pieces. This finally lead to the Arts & Craft movement which goal was to join industry and art together. This was a time of experiment and this is what caught my eye. The works of art I added from left to right show how it was mostly the rich being painted, product design and photography was evolving, machines for typography were being created, and posters used many fonts and sizes to grab attention without the use of color. Many things were tried and the rulebook was broken as expression and creativity blossomed.

Designing Utopia

This era started at the end of World War I this was another time in history where artists were looking to find purpose and passion and used art to their advantage. For this time in history I focused on Russia and their movement of Constructivism that focused on political perspectives. Constructivism was between 1919 to 1934. The art was mostly soviet propaganda and grasped the idea of communism. A magazine post by Artland explained the Art Movement of Constructivism. They discussed how many art forms were in posters using geometric bold shapes made by rulers and compasses. Many were turned into actual objects. Famous artists like Vladimir Tatlin designed a tower known as the Monument to the Third International built was glass, steel, and iron was destroyed during the era but is a symbol for Constructivism. The pictures I decided to showcase from left to right so the use of shapes and color blocking to display messages. This era gave me interest as this was a time where they took their political perspective and made art instead of violence. A Pinterest board I found shows many more art forms from this era.

Modernism In America

This era of graphic design was after World War II. The world was going from rural to urban and graphic design was following. Many europeans started migrating to the United States due to Nazism. This brought many new creative ideas and artists to come and explore their muse and build and design what diversity we have today. When researching this era to understand what went on and how the world felt at the time I turned to this Youtube video about The Introduction to Modernism in America. I chose to focus on the artist Ladislav Sutnar who was a Czech designer who came to New York City in 1939. He presented to industry with graphic vocabulary a strong voice. This is what drew me to him. His designs are what I chose for my image above. He was know for being crude with questionable pieces. Many students now use his signature graphics sometimes without even knowing it. I found more about Sutnar through a website called Aiga which had a Biography on Ladislav Sutnar. Modernism was about stay unique and trying new things. Being yourself and having a following because of that really drew me in.

Psychedelic Language

This era of Graphic Design took place in the 1960s where the word psychedelic meant mind expanding. Many in this generation were born after the war and led to them growing up questioning authority and cultural norms. The drug LSD which is a hallucinogenic which was thought to expand the mind and creativity. Artists that took this drugs or others in this decade really vibes with color and typography. Using the text to wrap inside images or creating a smoke like effect. This was a time for festivals and electronic music so many designs were for posters. To learn more about this time period I reached out to the internet and found a WordPress website on Graphic Design History for Psychedelic 60s. Other Artists like the famous Andy Worhol who is a cult favorite who used a silkscreening process to design many classic images we see like the Campbell’s Soup can. Pop art that he used was also used in many different forms by others to showcase the products of mass media. Roy Liechtenstein used a series of stencil like dots to make images, these are the style comics and newspaper graphics we still see today. In a Blogspot post by Kingy Graphic Design History titled 1960s Psychedelia, they explain how this era is all about color and fluorescents. Artists used melting and kaleidoscopic designs. Most designs in this era resembled the trip the artists would either be on or try to simulate in their work. I have always been fascinated by the art in the 60s, learning more made me really start enjoying this project.

Summary

History is powerful as it holds a place where we can look back and understand and relate the sense of feeling through their art. The ability to walk through a timeline like this and view to motivation behind artworks in different era was fascinating. Art is forever evolving and this excites me for what we can look back on in the era we are in now. I learned a lot about each era. From the industrial working to the modern urban design to the fun colorful pops of art we remember to this day.
