Why I Am Interested In Graphic Design<\/h2>\n

Ever since I was a little kid I have unintentionally channeled all of my ADHD energy into doodling. The end result is that my mom had to spend lots on all the printer paper that I stole and my notebooks have more drawings in them than actual notes. I have felt that I have always had a knack for art but have never been able to take advantage of it and take it seriously. I have found that my creativity seems to not be on demand and instead its only there when I’m bored and unfocused. That being said sophomore year of high school I was so done with classes that I wanted to drop out and start my own clothing brand. But the rational side prevailed because I knew that my doodles wouldn’t compete with modern clothing brands, or it could’ve we’ll never know. In this course I hope to have a place to focus on art and see if the sensible college me wants to pursue this as a career.<\/p>\n

Package Design<\/h2>\n

For my idea of package design I look at Music. In my life I haven’t\u00a0 found myself staring at my cereal boxes and toothpaste containers wondering why they are designed the way that they are. But when I see album covers my perception changes. I look at music in two ways, The art on the cover, and the art of the music. What is the art on the cover supposed to project to the listener before the sound ever hits their ears. Are the colors supposed to project the tone of the album? Why did the artist choose to put the shapes and visuals in the places that they put them? What does it all mean? then you listen to find out<\/p>\n

The orange cover is the 2016 Kanye west album; Life Of Pablo. It was designed by the Belgian artist Peter De Potter, it’s a very simplistic post modern cover<\/a>. I think the choice of the pictures on the top of the text reflect the tones of family and marriage throughout the album. for the middle album it’s an anthology of all of the Tribe Called Quests best tracks from their first 4 albums<\/a>. I believe the artist chose the simple face with the bands colors all over it because of its recognizability and relation to the group. For the third album I see Venice California, I believe the artist achieved exactly what they were aiming for. The cover shows recognizable landmarks and artists from that section of California.<\/p>\n

Brand and Identity Design<\/h2>\n

Im most interested in brand and identity design because I see both of the words as separate entities. I see Brand as how he artist wants their art to be projected and how they want the general public to perceive their work. And I see Identity as how the consumer wants a certain brand to be seen and how they want to be seen with it. For this type of design I observe it most in skateboards. In the brand side of this design I think of the companies producing the boards, are they trying to stick to their original designs because they sell or are they pushing the envelope with the coolest and most abstract boards that might fail in the market. For the identity side i see the consumer, Why did they buy that particular board? What about the design resonated with them and made them choose it?<\/p>\n

The first two boards I chose santa cruz decks. Founded in 1973 santa cruz was one of the original skate brands<\/a>. The two logos were designed by Jim Phillips and have been recycled in hundreds of different iterations In this brand I see security the name sells and sells on its classic recognizability. The boards on the right are welcome decks<\/a> I see creativity and innovation, art that doesn’t appeal to the many but has a cult following for those that it does.
