My Reaction<\/h2>\n

Initially I was pretty bored with the film about Helvetica. However, as I watched I became more and more interested in the Helvetica font, its history, and the reasons it was created. Though I’m not sure I understand why every speaker in the film spoke about it like it was a masterpiece of art. Still it was interesting to me to learn about the creation of a font that would modernize advertisements, road signs, magazines, and the way we see the world through the lens of typeface. Another topic that was discussed in the film was how typefaces, like Helvetica, influence they way we as average citizens and consumers, perceive and process the information given to us in the message. I never thought about the fonts used in ordinary everyday things but the film really showed me just how much of an impact the typeface used can have on everyone viewing it. This has really given me new understanding of the importance of typefaces and the thought process and hard work that the graphic designers put into creating them.<\/p>\n

“Its like music, its not the notes, its the space between the notes that make the music.”<\/h4>\n

This quote caught my attention because I myself am a musician, so naturally I had a sense of familiarity with this quote. My takeaway from this is when creating a typeface it is not enough to look at the style or shape of the letters or words, you need to look at the spacing of the letters too to be able to create a successful and elegant typeface. Just as you need to look at the space between the notes (or the rhythm) to make a good piece of music.<\/p>\n

“I am always interested in clarity, it should be clear, it should be straight forward.”<\/h4>\n

This quote interested me because I am a journalist, and as a journalist it is my job to make everything that I write as clear and straight forward as I can. You could say that I am also very interested in clarity. When writing an article I do not use a font like Pristina or Brush Script, I use Times New Roman and exclusively Times New Roman. TNR is designed to be easier to read thus making the writing more clear and straight forward.<\/p>\n

“Its about making something beautiful out of something ordinary.”<\/h4>\n

I liked this quote because it touches on the more artistic side of creating a typeface. Writing and reading words can be a very dull activity, using a unique typeface that fits the subject you are writing about can change that by fitting in with the atmosphere you are trying to convey through your writing. Ordinary writing and script can become beautiful and elegant based on the typeface chosen to fit the subject and context of the words.<\/p>\n
