Whether we notice it or not, graphic design plays a huge role in our everyday life. Graphic design originates from cave paintings which were about 16,000 years ago. Today we have replaced what was once cave painting to digital printing and media. While graphic design could be interpreted as just “pleasing to the eye,” it does much more than that. Graphic design is used to educate others, provide symbolism, and compel us to do certain things or believe in different perspectives. However there are many different types of graphic design, some of which are Interaction, Type, Publication, and Advertising to name a few. With this post, I will just be focusing on Type Design and Advertising Design.
Type Design
The purpose of Type Design is to create a whole new typeface family. The typeface family is composed of different elements, including; letters, numerals, ligatures, and punctuation. Often designers who use have sensitivity to detail, which is one of the reasons I am drawn to this area of graphic design. I am a detail-orientated person which makes me believe that this type of design could be a strong suit of mine. The simplicity of type and how it is also complex is intriguing. The simplicity of the text and it’s many different forms can be very appealing to the eye for most and allows for flexibility when creating.

Advertising Design
The purpose of Advertising Design is to fuse the visual aspects with different campaign marketing strategies. The flexibility and constant need for advertisements, allows designers to choose to go into magazine advertising or direct mail, both require designers frequently. Advertising is something that we see daily and in many different forms, whether it be on a billboard or another ad on Facebook. Today our advertisements are being personalized to the different searches we have on the web and the things that we may have personally showed interest in. This type of design integrates type and image into one, to provide a simple description of what is being shown. With type being integrated into advertising, I found Type Design and Advertising Design to work hand and hand, which is why they both stuck out to me.
