Conveying and Communicating
Graphic design combines aesthetics and creativity with problem-solving. The end goal is to convey messages, ideas, information and concepts. Graphic design is a part of our everyday lives, and can be impactful and thought-provoking, or subtle enough to miss. It combines elements of structure, aesthetics, and practicality and can be used in a variety of projects and contexts. In the modern age, graphic design can be used in creating signage for public spaces, informational brochures and posters, book and album covers, and advertisements for products and services.
I personally am interested in graphic design because I’ve always enjoyed visual art, but I never feel like there’s any purpose when I create visual art. I’m a music major, and when I start working on a new piece I always look for the story or deeper meaning of the piece. It’s then my job as the musician to perform with that message in mind and convey that to the listener. I want to learn more about how to achieve meaning and convey messages in visual art, and I hope to do so through learning about graphic design.
Brand and Identity Design
In order to stand out and succeed, companies need an identity. Their designs need to be unique and stand out, while remaining consistent across all aspects including their webpages, business cards, and advertisements. The identity of the company is familiar to the consumer, but stands out among the competition and other companies in a similar market. The identity of a brand includes its logos, webpage designs, and business cards, all of which should look cohesive. Click here to read about how to design a log as part of the brand identity. Brand and Identity Design is a category of graphic design that I find interesting because I admire the idea of individuality and standing out, and consistently staying true to that uniqueness. This is something that a graphic designer needs to achieve for a company in order to draw in the consumer and remain recognizable in the market.
Package Design
Package design deals with the design of a product’s packaging and is meant to entice the consumer to purchase the product. The government usually regulates the size and shape of the packaging, and the personality of the product is usually decided by consumer feedback. It’s the graphic designer’s job to consider these factors, as well as the brand identity, when designing creative and eye-grabbing packaging for a product. Click here to view cohesive packaging from Care-Of, a wellness company that sells vitamins and supplements. I would love to work on package design because the process is sort of like putting together a puzzle. Some of the pieces are already put together for you, and it’s your job to assemble the rest of the pieces into a stand-out piece of packaging that reflects both the product, and the company that’s selling it.
