What Is Graphic Design?
Graphic design has been being created and influencing humans dating back to before the upper Paleolitic era, when cave paintings were created. Cave paintings were some of the first forms of graphic design in history, they were originally painted as a universal form of visual communication between one another, but some paintings were believed to just bring good fortune as a form of art. Over 16,000 years later these cave paintings have developed into the art, symbols, and designs we know, and are influenced by today. Although you may not be thinking about graphic design while you grocery shop, the graphics you see on a products label are specifically tailored to market that product to you. The visuals we see can be subconsciously attracting us to the products we buy, simply perhaps because the box is blue, or has a cute character like Tony the Tiger marketing the product. Today I will be comparing and contrasting two forms of graphic design that I find interesting and why.
Motion Design
I chose to read and reflect more about Motion design because it’s a form of art I’ve always loved, and been interested in. I’ve always been interested in the history of animations and motion pictures as film is one of my favorite forms of art. Motion design was first brought to my attention, and captured my interest when I began watching the old Disney short films, and expanded all the way to video game graphics. In this week’s reading, I was able to learn more about the basis of motion design, and how these animations are created. Images can be sequenced and manipulated to create motion design, and can be enhanced by adding audio and visual effects. Motion design is a form of graphic design created to tell a living breathing story that keeps the entertainment of the viewer, and over all is visually pleasing to watch.

These images are examples of motion design that we probably all recognize, The pixar light bouncing across the screen, steamboat willie, and the disney shooting star song are all forms of motion design.

Environmental Design
Environmental Design is a unique form of graphic design that incorporates and manipulates all aspects of a space. The purpose of an environmental designer is to entirely transform the essence of a space. Environmental Design uses three-dimensional aspects as well as sensory experiences, to invite the audience into their intended space. I chose to learn more about Environmental design because it’s the form of graphic design I know the least about, and it’s almost an opposite of motion design, because it uses real world rather than computer graphics to story tell or transform a space. I hope to learn more about environmental design because I am also very passionate about interior design and spatial designing. One thing about environmental design that I love is that it’s about transforming the space and immersing the audience, by creating a space with purpose.
