Graph Design surrounds and influences us on a daily basis wether we notice it or not. Despite going unnoticed, graphic design ideally stimulates a viewer intellectually while also triggering an emotional response through the use of familiar and sentimental colors and visuals. Graphic design can be used for a variety of ideas, not solely for businesses or product packaging, as one may initially think of.
I personally am in interested in graphic design because it has always made me wonder how these designs influence our decisions and emotions without us even realizing. I am a nursing major and learning about how graphic design can affect people emotionally or physically is truly fascinating to me. I also usually struggle with creative expression, so I am hoping that this class will help me with that. I’ve always enjoyed looking at the different designs that businesses use for marketing or branding and I’m excited to learn about why they make some of the decisions that they do. The two areas of graphic design that are the most interesting to me are package design and advertising design.
Advertising Design
Advertising design is a method that can be incorporated in a multitude of different medias. These can range from billboards, to magazines, to even mailed ads. This type of design typically incorporates visuals with text to create interest from the consumer. These advertisements are directly impacted by the opinions of the consumers which means they are constantly changing in order to stay up to date with the currents trends that are gaining popularity. The purpose of this design is to sell a product or a service, meaning that these ads need to stay up to date and relevant with modern interests. The following link discusses the importance of a good design when selling a product or service. This area of design interests me because it incorporates modern trends along with the parts of design that draw in the consumer without them even noticing. For example, the ad for the chips uses colors that are visually associated with happy feelings, therefore associating the product with happiness.

Package Design
This form of design is how consumers decide what products they want. If a product has a design that is not appealing to the eye or to the consumer, then it will not sell as much as similar products. Package design is influenced by several other factors, such as government regulations and focus group opinions. While similar to brand identity design, this form changes from product to product of a particular brand while usually maintaining a similar aesthetic. The following link has examples of different package design ideas for popular brands. Using human opinions on these designs and how people react to them is what makes me so interested in this area of design. Package designs are a common way for artists to explore how they could represent new ideas for a product. When consumers are buying products, they tend to buy products that they are drawn to, which is similar to my interests in package design, because it ties into human emotions and subconscious responses.
