What is graphic design?

Introduction:

Graphic design is the process of creating an interaction with a person or group of people to communicate a message. There are a variety of forms, approaches, and ways to communicate these messages. There are a variety of styles people use. Most importantly each designer is different in their own field of design.

Environmental Design:

One category of design that I really like is environmental design. This way of designing is communicating a message through a 3D physical statue or structure. It’s about manipulating the world around us to express a feeling or emotion or message. Adam Parker is a graphic designer from London,  with over ten years of experience, he creates models for museums and other locations.

Above are three examples of environmental design. The far right image shows a design for saving energy. The middle image is by Adam Parker set in a museum and the on the far right is an outdoor landscape design outside of a college.

Brand Design:

Another interesting form of graphic design is brand design. Brand design is creating a look for a store or product that will make it appealing and stand out. Rob Janoff designed the Apple logo in 1977, it has since been changed and updated in color but the image of an  apple with a missing bite is now the signature of Apple. Below you can see the progression (from left to right) of the apple logo from 1977 to present day.

Another very popular logo is the starbucks logo. This logo has also gone through a progression of changes but the original design was created by Terry Hecker who designed it as a twin tailed mermaid. This unique image has been around since 1971 when the coffee company was founded.

Graphic design catches people eyes. Weather it’s the signs you’re looking or the logo on your computer or the image of your t-shirt, they were designed by someone to send a message.
