Throughout this documentary, I was interested in hearing the different perspectives from the speakers and how Helvetica has impacted them. Before this documentary, I did not realize how frequently Helvetica is used in our daily lives. Everywhere we look there is a different example of Helvetica, whether it be on a street sign or a magazine advertisement. One thing that caught my attention, was the fact that typefaces were created whereas now they are digitally made with computers.

“Type is saying things to us all the time. Typefaces express a mood, an atmosphere. They give words a certain coloring.”

This quote allowed me to reflect on how I interpret type and how my interpretation of different typefaces and why I choose to use them. Typeface allows us all to have a personality and style through our work. This is one of the main reasons why I want to focus my graphic design abilities on typeface because it has so many different abilities and uniqueness.

“And it’s hard to evaluate it. It’s like being asked what you think about off-white paint. It’s just… it’s just there. And it’s hard to get your head around, it’s that big.”

This quote connected with me a thought I had at the beginning of the documentary. I very quickly learned that Helvetica is everywhere in our everyday lives, which is what this quote is saying. Whether we notice it or not, type plays a key role in our lives and influences us.
Wim Crouwel
“…creating order is creating typeface.”

This quote shares the influence that typeface has on our society. It states that order and typeface are similar, therefore with the right type you will then have the right order.
