Elements of Graphic Design

Most people at least once have caught themselves staring at a random flyer, on your way to work or in school. You might even wonder why this one caught your attention out of the possible hundreds you walk by daily. When a graphic designer creates an advertisement, logo or anything for that matter, every characteristic is well thought out in advance.

“Do not confuse style with fashion. Style is derived from the real needs of a client or society. Fashion is a superficial condition adopted by those anxious to appear elegant or sophisticated.”

A good example of a design with balance between active, and empty space would be the Starbucks logo. The logo at first glance seems simple maybe even lacking flare. However, the designer was able to incorporate a concise message with a very central focal point. The siren in this design not only stands out because of the active space, but also manages to represent the history behind the company. This logo seems to work great for the company, even with its simplicity, it’s able to say something without words. That being said, designs like this may be misinterpreted as lazy or mundane, but I think it shows experience and professionalism.
