Elements of Graphic Design

This chapter helps to explain the different elements of space in design! It really informed my eye by helping me be able to see greater detail in the magazines and newspapers I read! There are always certain sections that I skip and never was really sure why, it just didn’t seem very appealing to me. I now know my brain just felt overwhelmed by the jumbled adds trying to fit all on one page! When a design is done carefully and a correct amount of space is given it makes it much more attractive as well as readable to the intended audience. “Readers respond to consistent page structure. The job is not to fill in all the space in order to impress the reader with sheer quantity of information. That will just overwhelm the reader with over fullness.” A great example they used was a cup of coffee, if you fill it too much you will probably spill and make a mess all over the place; but if you don’t fill it enough you might have to refill it as well. Obsessing to fill all open space creates unneeded problems. Structure and flexibility is needed in every design! “Space attracts the reader by making it look accessible, nonthreatening and manageable.” I am currently inside the lab doing this post, as I look around me the room seems pretty full at first glance, there are about 10 or 12 giant computers in here. However, there is plenty of space all around me (partly due to covid and) so I do not feel as though I have no room to move and I feel comfortable in surroundings! A good example of empty space would be the extra room in my apartment. It is as bare as a burned field with nothing except some old clothes and random miscellaneous items, it feels very empty walking in. My room is the next over with the exact same dimensions; my room however has a lot of decorating all the way down to stars on the ceiling and posters on the wall. We used just about every space we could in the room to make it extremely active, we did not go overboard though. There is still a few parts of the wall that have not been covered up along with a lot of the new wood floors as well.
