Elements of Design: Chapter 1
A successful design needs to be elegant or sophisticated. Elegance in a piece describes content that is full and simple. White space authorizes titles to stand out and wide graphics to extend. However, too much of its white space can take readers into the wrong direction. From the example used in the reading, when a song plays, there’s usually a break or pause. The breaks or pauses in a song makes the song stand out, but a lingering pause will leave people confused or even bored. This is similar to what making a design is like.
In design, more is not better.
You need an easy and balanced proportion. Graphic, industrial, interior, or architecture designs will get noticed if the use the right type, imagery, space.
An example of empty space would be white spaces. White spaces are significant in design because they depict the way the whole area of the picture looks, but only depending how much you can use in it. On the other hand, active space is creating movement in a piece. Unlike empty space, active space can take up a whole image. For example, a photo is focused on boy riding a bike. The person is in motion and the whole piece seems to become a blur. There can be a lot of space brought to this design and it doesn’t matter how much space you have to make your design stand out from others.
