Century vs. Helvetica

When it comes to these two fonts theirs only one thing they seem to share in common, they have easy readability. Century is a little more old fashioned whereas Helvetica is more modern. My favorite one between the two is Century, I like the way that the tails and shoulders curve. It was the first major American typeface that was designed in 1894 by Linn Boyd Benton and Theodore Low DeVinne. This typeface emerged from a similar one called Egyptian which was characterized by thick slab serifs and thick main strokes that had little contrast between the thick and thin. The other typeface, Helvetica, is sans serif font of Swiss origin designed by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann. Helvetica is what brought popularity to the sans serif typefaces, they were originally used back in the nineteenth century and it wasn’t until the twentieth century that its popularity grew. While the boldness of Helvetica gives it some advantages such as clarity, I enjoy the thick to thin contrast that Century provides. One aspect of Helvetica that I do really enjoy is symmetry; it has slightly condensed letters and a clean design which makes it very readable. Century on the other hand has pointy brackets which make it most appealing to me.
