03 Elements of Graphic Design

After reading the first chapter of the book Elements of Graphic Design I realized how much more aware I am of space and empty space. When you look at an image or picture,  people tend to skim through it without really analyzing it. If you’re the designer it is your job to catch the attention of the viewer, in doing so you want to be organized and neat. It is important to not be too overwhelming, you want your design to be easy to interpret and overall effortless to look at. I never realized how much I use empty space myself. One example where I can notice empty space right now is in between the posters that are up on my wall. I tried my best t0 have an even alignment of the posters so that it looks like they are symmetrical to one another. In doing this I was using the empty space around the posters to have the active space (which is the posters) really pop. Another way that empty space is utilized is when you type or write, you space the letters and words in order to make your writing legible. If you take a little time to observe your surroundings where ever you happen to be, you should be able to easily notice the difference between active and empty space.
