Elements of Graphic Design

Empty Space and Active Space

This reading taught me a lot about my perception of space. You have to believe what is more important rather than what isn’t. I learned that design is a process not a result. It is a process of taking unrelated parts and putting them together to make something that sends some kind of message. You should not overfill the landscape with active space, it can be overwhelming. Too little space allows for the page to be crowded. Empty space is sophisticated and calming. If you treat emptiness and active space equally, emptiness can be dynamic. I learned that visual simplicity is a very beautiful thing. It creates a balance and is easy going on the eyes.

The space in my environment is both empty and active. I have several posters arranged on my walls in my dorm to fill some of the emptiness, but not clutter my walls. I allow breaks in between the decorations. It is like taking a breath in between sentences.

“Pauses between songs on a record show content the way white space does.” I really liked this quote because I couldn’t agree with it more. The empty space is like a little getaway from all the activity. Empty space additionally shows off the subject. This can be used with countless things in life. For example picking out an outfit. Empty (plain pants with no design) and then an active, colorful top. The shirt pops out while the pants calm down the outfit. There is a balance between empty and active space and that is why they go together like puzzle pieces.
