05 The Design and The Play

Design and The Play

Personally after reading Paul Rands excerpt, I feel as though it helped me gain more backstory and detail into the designs that he talks about. Before I would use these games whether it be a crossword, or technique like the nine fold square, with little thought about it. I also feel that it brought up some good points about having rules in your design, I’ve never exactly thought of it that way or knew it had such importance. I believe the authors ideas of teaching would be effective, creating rules and making a game out of a lesson would make it more digestible for the student.

“This ability to do much with little-to find a bull’s head in a bicycle seat and handle bars-is another aspect of Picasso’s wizardry.”

This article made me aware of the simplicity that even professional graphic designers use, it doesn’t show a lack of creativity but further highlights the design by adding rules. Without these rules I think it’s fair to say designing something would be boring, having unlimited possibilities might prove to be too much. Adding guidelines to your composition might make it more manageable, and help you appreciate and pay attention to the smaller details.
