The design and The Play is an article written by Paul Rand. Paul Rand is a famous graphic designer known for designing logos such as ABC, UPS, and Westinghouse. This article gave us as readers more insight into Rand’s work as a designer, and some context into the background behind what makes a logo fun and easily digestible by an audience. This article gave many interesting points about the human instinct to play and push the creative limits of design and expression, and in contrast described some of the limitations that are put on the aspect of play within design. Some of these limitations of play are actually incredible design tools such as the grid system. Rand described the grid as follows “The grid, then, is the discipline which frees him from the time-consuming burden of making certain decisions.” from this quote I was allowed insight into the way in which certain design tools while they may provide a great service and help guide a designer, can also create certain limitations on creative play. I enjoyed reading this article, because as an artist, I often run into similar dilemmas when working with certain mediums of art. I enjoy the aspects of organization the modular system provides as I like tomato my work looks as clean and simple as possible; I do like to add a twist of personality and creativity that can feel restricting which I thought was interesting.
