08 Grids and Framing

Frames are found everywhere in our daily lives, whether obvious or hidden in plain sight. Modern designers aim to hide these frames in plain sight. However, an image or focus can be framed not just by the physical ‘frame,’ but also by captions, and cropping. The frame really affects the way a viewer perceives the image or object; it creates the conditions for understanding the content that it frames. Grids are also a key part of any work, and they organize the content being displayed. They align various elements together, and brings structure to the work.

I think that the frame of a work is something I’ve never really considered, but the reading was really eye-opening for me. I see framing in my own room where my plants sit on a windowsill, and in the parking lot outside of my apartment where parking spots are framed by trees and sidewalks. I can observe grids in my surroundings by the way my dresser drawers are organized, and the way that our pantry is laid out in the kitchen. Framing and grids create structure and organization, and help to formulate the perspective a viewer has on the content.
