Framing and Grids

“Frames create the conditions for understanding an image or object.” The frame shapes our understanding of context from an image or object. What’s interesting to me, is how much framing impacts a work of art, because it is like the icing on top, to make it all come together. The frame gives you a sense of direction to whatever it is you’re looking at. A well-designed interface is both visible and invisible, escaping attention when not needed while shifting into focus on demand. The reading makes a really interesting analogy by stating how, “a phone isn’t a phone without the controls”, and they make this analogy to inform the reader that the frame is what puts it all together. Now if you shift to objects like windows and doors, these also compete for our attention. When you walk by a house for instance, and you notice the door stands out between the rest of the house, this is an example how the framing has an impact on grabbing the attention of the seeker when needed. With windows, the framing can dramatically change the way a person feels because if a window is small, then not enough sunlight will get through and can impact how the person feels. If the window is wide and open, then most likely can change a person’s mood from happy to sad. The framing of words can also shift into how something can be interpreted or told. How a person frames their words can dramatically impact the way their words come across to other people.
