Modern Homes
Intricate and complex frames are being moved away from. Especially in home design people are striving for the more basic, clean neat look. People want the raw image of a door without frame for the simplicity of it. THis is mentioned in the reading that modern homes seek to eliminate that. I think we see that a lot. Many modern homes are not as detailed as older homes. They do not have door frames or detailed picture frames. Window frames are simple and monotoned. Many fish tanks are now seamless, meaning they are glued glass pieces put together with no visible rim or frame. Many art pieces are hung with no frame to show simplicity and to draw attention to the art rather than the frame.
Books
However there are places where frames are necessary. When you are reading a book, if there were no margins and the text span from edge to edge top to bottom, it would be overwhelming, even if you are reading the same amount of text as before the white space allows for a break and a pause for your eyes. There are standard plates for frames. Many times they are there to emphasise an image and make it stand alone. The lack of a frame could show a comparison or togetherness or two shown pictures or objects.
