Helvetica

Helvetica Response

When watching the film Helvetica in class, I analyzed the way it was directed, and questioned why it was edited the way it was. A major part of the film aside from each person talking, is how they took the viewers on a. trip through different places. These different places were all connected by the font Helvetica. I saw shop signs, traffic signs, people’s clothing and more all sporting the same average font. Trough out the film, many people spoke about Helvetica and their opinions on it including some history about the font. Many people declared the font as an every day design that is used for things that don’t need to stand out. Some would express their love for other types of fonts for other types of things.

Neville Brody

While going in to depth about the font Helvetica, Neville Brody expressed his view on the font. He connected it to a sense of uniform by saying, “In a way the Helvetica is a club, it’s a mark of membership, it’s a badge.”  He put this in the best ay possible to try and make an understanding for the viewers at home. We now know, when using Helvetica, you want it as an everyday font, not if you want to impress the reader.

Stefan Sagmeister

Thinking of graphic design through out the years, it has come a long way. Stefan Sag meister stated, “Graphic design is accepted by more people… they use it as an expression of their identity.” He made me realize that graphic design now is used everyday for a lot of people, especially in my generation. Social media is a form of this, allowing people to share their everyday lives. Then you looking into the picture, the person is wearing a t-shirt that has a term typed in Helvetica. Then you look behind the person, there is a store sale sign written in Helvetica.

Mike Parker

Going back off of what Sagmeister said about graphic design, Mike Parker said something that reminded me of how common the design really is. Parker said, “You care about graphic design like it’s the clothes you are wearing.” Many artists express themselves through graphic design, making posters, album covers, and more . With this new electronic world, many people use graphic design as a form of identity and do more hobbies with it as well.
