When someone says Helvetica is everywhere, believe it. Never have I put any thought into what the fonts of street signs were. But suddenly I am looking at every coffee cup, brand logo, and sign differently. I mean, fonts have never been something I was particularly fascinated by. I never gave a second glance at what font something was. And even after watching the Helvetica movie, I wouldn’t say I care for the fonts of items anymore than before. But it is something I am uber aware of at the moment. It is a little mind boggling to me that a vast majority of places just decided that Helvetica would be the universal font to use.
Massimo Vignelli
“Life of a designer is the lives of fight, fight against the ugliness, just like a doctor fights against disease”
This quote was super interesting to me purely for the analogy Vignelli uses. I think that the analogy brings designers into a new light of importance. While comparing it to being a doctor, the quote is insinuating that designers hold a level of power. And honestly, I see that as completely true. They control so much of how we see things in our society and play a much bigger role then many people may realize.
Erik Spierkermann
“It’s air, you know. It’s just there. There’s no choice. You have to breath, so you have to use Helvetica”
I enjoyed this quote a lot because it encompassed what they movie was about. Helvetica is something that our world is accustomed to, that not much attention is ever paid to it. We are so accustomed to using it that theres never a question of what font or why. I think that that is the part that intrigues so many people during this movie and what intrigued me.
Jonathon Hoefler
“And Helvetica maybe says everything, and that’s perhaps part of it’s appeal”
I absolutely love this quote because of how simple yet precise it is. It was straight to the point, but Hoefler said it in such an elegant and beautiful way. Especially that he put “Helvetica” in the role of a human, it really brought the quote to life in my opinion. Just like the quote by Spierkermann, I think that this quote embodies what the whole movie was about, that Helvetica is everywhere and has such a level of importance.
