Framing

For me personally, I have mixed emotions about framing. There are certainly some instances where framing is needed and complete a piece. For instance, pictures look out of place if they are hung on a wall without a frame and in some paintings when a frame is added it brings an overall sense of completion to the painting itself. There are some other cases however where frames are not needed and may even ruin the piece if one is added. Tattoos for example often do not have frames because they are meant to be free-flowing and sometimes even fade off into the skin itself. When a frame is added to a tattoo it can make it feel very restricted and may take away from the overall image or message that it is trying to convey. That being said though I am in no way against frames because I do believe that they play a huge role in art and the world. Frames are not just a part of art either, there is framing in language, in housing, and in life itself. In language, the way that someone speaks to the other person frames how the conversation is going to go. In a way, I see framing in language almost as a tone. If I was to talk to my friend angrily, I am framing the fact that I am angry and that something is wrong. When I yell in excitement I am framing the fact that I am overjoyed about something. Framing in housing allows a room to come together. For instance, the framing in my room is the trim on my walls. It lines the entirety of my room creating a framing feel and so when I painted my room a few years ago I painted my trim a different color allowing my room to express myself more and create more contrast with light and dark. In life, frames are around us hypothetically. Windows can be seen as frames because when looking through a window, whatever you see on the other side is what is being framed. It is honestly quite interesting to think about how prominent framing is in my life and I just never really thought about it before. Framing in my opinion can complete or ruin a piece but can also be necessary for certain instances. Without framing I feel that a lot of pieces of art would feel incomplete because they might bleed too much or just end too abruptly. Overall framing is definitely a very interesting thing to think about.
