Graphic Design History

Reading graphic design history made me have a much better understanding of it and realizing how far the eras really span. To me I always associate graphic design with being a modern topic but truly the first full scale art movement was hundreds of years ago dating back to the mid 1800s. The art has been transforming from generation to generation and will continue too. After reading through the four design movements I enjoyed the most were De Stijl, Aestheticism, Psychedelic Language, and Dada.

De Stijl

A dutch abstract art movement Meaning “The Style”  consists of straight lines, right angles and primary colors. This design style caught my eye not for anything crazy, I just enjoy clean styles and I feel like that’s the bet way to describe it. Nothing is too crazy about it its just subtle and simple I really enjoy how neat it feels. Gerrit Rietveild (Pictured below) brought clean lines and asymmetry to the concept of De Stijl architecture shown by his famous Schroder house.

Aestheticism

This art style resinated with me for not only the style of the art but also the concept in what its set out to mean. This late 19th century art movement is centered around the concept that art should be created for the sake of its beauty alone. To me I think that’s really important and puts the people that want to micro-analyze art to the side. I can appreciate just looking at a nice piece of work and not trying to get inside the side of the creator. It’s simple and the easiest form to appreciate.

Psychedelic Language

A popular art movement beginning in the 60s was born via drugs during this time. Hippies were using psycadelics, psyche, meaning to manifest or awaken the mind brought visions to their head which allowed the art to transform. I enjoy this style because of its bright colors and playfulness. It was definitely one of the more interesting art styles and goes to show you.  how your mind can be affected by these drugs.

Dada

I liked this art style because it was different in almost every way from all previous styles. Dada beginning around 1916 was the artists reactions to how they perceived the world after the First World War. Ive always enjoyed learning about world wars and recall back to hearing of this for of art in my old classes. Although its one of the darker styles I feel it really reflects how those artist felt at that time, the world was as scary as a place as its ever been. One of the more ironic pieces of Dadaism came in the form of Marcel Duchamp Urinal.

While it was rejected he wanted to present art in a different form that was funny, ironic, and intellectual. He took an every day object and flips it upside down elevating its status and is still talked about to this day.

Conclusion

Altogether reading and learning about these different styles made me realize the difference in arts and brains in the world throughout different times. While all these forms are different I enjoyed them each in they’re own way. I now feel I might start to pay a bit more attention to art styles I see in my everyday life. Ive never been the most understanding of art and the history of it so this helped my a lot.
