Graphic Design History Final

GRAPHIC DESIGN HISTORY

Art has always brought me to feel something, whether it is a sculpture, painting, graphic art, or photograph I appreciate it for all that it is and most importantly the feeling that it brings me. When I feel a work of art is resonating with me it is almost like that was the missing piece to my life, I needed to see that art! To some that could sound a little dramatic but it is just like finding your new favorite song, you just love it! Within reading about the history of graphic design I found a lot of interest in many different styles of art gone over through the eras. The ones that stuck out most and resonated with me had to be abstraction, cubism, futurism, and dada. Allow me to explain why I love these styles in particular.

Abstraction

Whether it was graphic design, drawing, or any other type of designing, I have always been drawn to the abstract pieces. I feel as though a lot of this type of art represents my own brain, and that must be the reason I am really drawn to abstract art. I appreciate what is unique and authentic, things of their own nature speak to me. Abstract art is always so playful, sometimes I even find myself giggling at it when I find something cool or funny within it. It is always surprising when you can see new things such as figures or faces within the abstract art. Finding art within art is amazing and I feel that this always happens for me when looking at a abstract piece. This type of art will always live on as it is created just by doodling, and to me that is incredibly special.

Cubism

This type of art immediately caught my attention within the reading when looking at the piece Les Demoiselles d’Avignon created by Picasso in 1907. I had recognized this type of art because it had always grabbed my eyes, but I had not known that it was called Cubism, I also wasn’t informed on its history until this reading. Im glad I can now put a name on its face, this art is so unique! I love the way it creates an obvious picture of something but not in the correct form that you would normally visualize or see it. So much fun can be created in this type of art, it can also feel very dramatic too. I find it interesting that you can feel something off of an image that could also be seen as silly. I guess it is the best of both worlds. This type of art has abstract art involved in it too, so it must not be a surprise that I really enjoy it!

Futurism

The art style of futurism brings me back almost like a de javo experience. It reminds me of old board games and books specifically from my great aunts house. There must have been a lot of futuristic art within the games we played and books she would read to me. It almost feels like i’ve been there while looking at these pictures below that I had chose. Not only am I drawn to this type of art because it makes me nostalgic, but also I enjoy the original feeling I get from it. It Feels inspiring and it really does feel and look futuristic. The colors and shapes remind me of the olympics and this is very exciting. Futuristic art brings good feeling to me, it is hopeful in the way that everything seems in motion, it is saying “we have a future a head stay in motion.”

Dada

Another art style that I feel something towards is Dada, it is unique and very much my style when I am sad. Im sure this makes sense honestly because this art came out after artists perceiving “when the world had gone mad”. Life was chaotic with world war I and this art was a real expression of it. I feel things are crazy when we are confused and unsure on what to do and we feel new emotions. The things we do can be so random when we are in a state of chaos or confusion. This art speaks to me in that way. When I am sad I am drawn to random pictures with energy, an example would be a picture I have on my phone of a car smashed into a building with colored lights all around. Now, i’m not sure if this was real or the story behind it but I get a feeling that it just makes sense to me and it is a little depressing but it is electric. So I’d say when I am down or in confusion states I do feel more heavily drawn to looking and creating Dada art, but I am always in appreciation of it.

The expression of art is amazing and it creates more art. In just going over and learning more about these styles I already feel the need to create something. “Art creates art!” I love that quote and I feel that it really is important to share your work because of this. Your work can resonate with someone just as much at the styles of abstraction, cubism, futurism, and dada did for me. Each style is so unique and can inspire others, or just give them a good feeling. With these styles I feel the art is speaking for itself and I enjoy listening.
