Helvetica, The Film

This film was a very well spoken explanation about how Helvetica is what it is and how it came to be. In my option, it gave us students a greater insight on how graphic design is extremely effective on the world. The greater explanation of Helvetica helps us understand more just how the littlest of details can change the way people view everything. This movie was very helpful for a new graphic design student.

Quotes from the Film

Wim Crouwel; “The meaning and the context of the text and not the typeface, and that is why we love Helvetica so much.”

I like this quote because it provides a deeper perspective on Helvetica. It explain how the font has a deeper meaning then just it being a font. It shows how graphic design is so much more than just something to look at and that there is so much more behind it.

Johnathan Hoefler; “And Helvetica maybe says everything, and that’s perhaps part of its appeal.”

This quote is great because it goes deeper into the idea that Helvetica has a deeper meaning than just another font. Implying that Helvetica says everything means just the font explain whatever the words or design is trying to display.

Leslie Savan; “All those problems aren’t going to spill over, they’ll be contained. And in fact maybe they don’t exist.”

This quote explains how Helvetica may be used in a “bad” context, yet the bad meaning of the words are covered up by Helvetica. The problems may even be completely hidden by the font and could maybe be forced to mean something completely different than it meant to mean.
