Project 3: Elements of Graphic Design

After reading this chapter I look around my dorm room and notice how cluttered it is. My roommate and I pretty much have something in every corner of the room. Dorm rooms would be much more pleasing if they were designed better. We moved our room around recently and it seems much more open than it was. We moved the open area to the farther side of our room so when you walk in you see that part of the room and are drawn towards it. The chapter said how space attracts people by making the page look accessible, unthreatening, and manageable. Not having enough space makes the page or the area look cluttered. The eye is drawn to a clean and put together design. The chapter also said how readers are far less likely to notice “too much” white space on a page. They are more likely to notice not enough white space because it is overwhelming. Empty space is unoccupied space where something can be put. An example of this would be an empty parking spot. Active space is space that is consciously placed and it has an active role in design. An example of this would be on a website instead of making everything overlap you would space it out with even spaces to make it more appealing. You need to find the balance between too much white space and not enough. If you have too much it might be too boring but if you don’t have enough it will be very unpleasing to the eye.
